The Flower Garden Banks Installation at Seawolf Park, is a community focused art project created by Eepi Chaad. This site specific art project will connect Galveston residents and visitors with their geographic proximity to the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, a national treasure which includes the northernmost coral reefs in the continental United States. The installation also celebrates the biodiversity of the sanctuary with a specific focus on bioluminescence, which refers to the phenomenon of emission of light by living organisms.
The installation consists of three dimensional berm fiber sculptures which map three of the seventeen reef banks which make up the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. The Stetson Bank, West Bank, and East Bank were the first banks to make up the sanctuary. Each colorful berm has been created in a collaborative process where Chaad works with artists and community members using weaving techniques to mimic the diversity of the reefs.
The installation at Seawolf Park will close on July 16th with a collaborative performance of sound and movement that explores the relationships between spaces and species that exist in the coral reef systems. The performance is choreographed by Lori Yuill and the score composed by Jeremy LeJeune. The celebration invites the audience to bring picnic and join in the communal space to enjoy the performance along with a discussion between Chaad, Yuill, and LeJeune.
